The Predictable Debacle of the Vote for Independence in East Timor
The people of East Timor expressed their sovereign will on 30 August 1999 and voted to follow the road towards independence. After a brief analysis of the reasons that led to the signature of the New York agreement, it is important to take a look at the questions concerning the construction itself of a democratic State in East Timor. An intelligent, unbiased look back over the history of the inter-Timorese conflict of 1975 may be a solution to find the premises of a fair, democratic society, in a micro-society where many are linked by family bonds. Finally, the study must take into account the question of the development of a national identity in East Timor : if there was little trace of this in 1975, it has come into being, developed and organised itself by resistance to Indonesian domination.
