Les
gauchistes orphelins .
Jornalista, maioritariamente negros, no
Moambique.
Orphaned Leftists . Press and Power in Post-Colonial Mozambique
(1975-1990)
The article retraces the formation of the ideological alliance between leftist
journalists and the country’s new authorities, an alliance resulting in the
involvement of the press in the socialist project and its adoption of revolutionary
journalism. The complicity between the two parties was often broken by the mistrust felt
by those in power for these leftist journalists, young white intellectuals accused
of taking a different road from the operative, military conception of information of
FRELIMO, the Mozambique liberation movement. In a combat situation, FRELIMO had an
activist view of news as playing a role in mobilisation.
The context of the civil war in Mozambique and regional conflict in Southern Africa, in
which the press was one of the branches, brought about the collapse of the ideological
alliances between the authorities and leftist journalists. Other journalists, mostly
Blacks who had not been involved hitherto in the phase of socialism , came to
power and the leftists found themselves left out in the cold. It was from the
disenchantment of these leftist journalists that sprang the development of free
speech in Mozambique. |
