Entre Afrique et Méditerranée : les « contextes » de l’anthropologie au Portugal. Entrevue avec João de Pina Cabral
L’entrevue avec l’anthropologue portugais João de Pina Cabral a été accordée à Lorenzo Macagno, en février 2000, à Lisbonne. Pina Cabral s’y exprime à propos de divers moments-clef de sa trajectoire intellectuelle. En même temps, l’entrevue cherche à retracer l’itinéraire de l’anthropologie au Portugal et les contextes locaux et internationaux qui l’ont influencée. Enfin, elle veut contribuer à la réflexion sur les implications politiques et institutionnelles du processus de production de la connaissance dans un champ déterminé.
Dans le cas du Portugal, ces implications pour l’anthropologie se situent, d’une part, dans l’acceptation (toujours en discussion) d’un supposé « monde méditerranéen ». D’autre part, elles se réfèrent aussi à la présence du Portugal dans les espaces de ses différents territoires d’Outre-mer. Ce double contexte (entre Afrique et Méditerranée) apparaît dans la trajectoire même, individuelle, de Pina Cabral, qui a fait des « terrains » au Portugal mais a vécu longtemps au Mozambique. Elle reflète aussi son passage par Oxford, lieu où, selon ses propres mots, la tradition africaniste a toujours été une caractéristique de l’anthropologie méditerranéiste.

A entrevista do antropólogo português João de Pina Cabral foi concedida a Lorenzo Macagno, em fevereiro de 2000, em Lisboa. Aqui, Pina Cabral se debruça sobre alguns momentos chaves de sua trajetória inteletual. Ao mesmo tempo, a entrevista procura traçar um itinerário da antropologia em Portugal e dos contextos locais e internacionais que a influenciaram. Em ultima instância, o texto procura refletir sobre as implicações políticas e institucionais do processo de produção do conhecimento numa determinada área.
No caso de Portugal, essas implicações para a antropologia se situam, de um lado, na participação (sempre discutida) de um suposto « mundo mediterrâneo ». De outro lado, se referem também à presença de Portugal ao longo de diferentes territórios ultramarinos. Este duplo contexto (entre a África e o Mediterrâneo) aparece na própria trajetória individual de Pina Cabral, que fez trabalho de campo em Portugal, mas morou muito tempo em Moçambique. Também pode ser detectado em sua passagem por Oxford, um lugar onde, segundo o próprio Pina Cabral, o encontro com a tradição africanista foi sempre uma característica da antropologia mediterranista.

This interview with the Portuguese anthropologist João de Pina Cabral was granted to Lorenzo Macagno in February 2000 in Lisbon. Pina Cabral talks about various key moments in his intellectual development. The interview also attempts to retrace the pathway of anthropology in Portugal and the local and international contexts that have influenced it. Finally, it seeks to contribute to reflection on the political and institutional implications of the process of knowledge production in a given field.
In Portugal’s case, these implications for anthropology are ones of acceptance (still under discussion) of a supposed « Mediterranean world » on the one hand, and reference to the presence of Portugal on its various overseas territories on the other. This double context (between Africa and the Mediterranean) appears in the very trajectory of Pina Cabral, who spent time in Portugal but lived for a long time in Mozambique. It also reflects his time in Oxford, where, in his own words, the Africanist tradition has always been a characteristic of Mediterraneanist anthropology.
