dmocratique.
Protestantismo e democracia no Brasil
pensa.
Protestantism and Democracy in Brazil
The reality of Protestant history in Brazil is more complex than is generally thought.
This study makes
a rapid approach to the Protestant presence in the pre-1985 political process, including
during the military period, before analysing the present period, in which the
Pentecostalists have become important political activists. In the light of data from the
contemporary religious field (electoral behaviour and opinion surveys ; conflicts
between rival structures claiming to represent all Protestants ; the ascension of the
Universal Church of the Kingdom of God and its hegemonic ambitions in the Evangelical
field), we attempt to make an evaluation of the ambivalent tendencies of Brazilian
Protestantism in relation to the question of democracy. |
