Territorial Identities in Portugal. The Weight of Imagination
The text by Ferrão mainly deals with phenomena which illustrate the structuring of the Portuguese space. Although one can agree about the results of these processes in Portugal, their similarity with those that affected neighbouring Spain but created very different effects, leads us to think that highly distinct spatial settings and economic decisions were at the origin of those differences.
We must analyse this from the point of view of the relationship with the territory and identities. In this domain, the most marked levels of belonging are national and local in Portugal, while the regional level is weaker and less well-defined. Better organisation on this level would be desirable in order to take up a challenge that has long been inherent to the territory of Portugal, a challenge that relates to its limited size and has been heightened by the end of the empire and of the country’s maritime importance.
